The Australian Cattle Dog has been of great benefit to the beef industry of Australia . They became indispensable when populations spread to huge farmlands as they enabled farmers to maintain huge herds. Without the Australian Cattle Dog, the beef industry of Australia would probably have great difficulty in developing into the important industry it is today.

Appearance Description:
- Strong
- Compact
- Head is strong
- Broad skull slightly curved between the ears, flattening to a slight but definite stop
- Cheeks muscular
- Under jaw strong, deep and well developed
- Nose is black
- Eyes should be of oval shape and medium size and must express alertness and intelligence
- Eye color is dark brown
- Ears should be of moderate size, preferably small rather than large
- Teeth should be strong and evenly spaced, gripping with a scissor-bite
- Neck is extremely strong, muscular and of medium length
- Shoulders are strong, sloping and muscular
- Hindquarters are broad, strong and muscular
- Tail is moderately low and follows the contours of the sloping croup and of length to reach approximately to the hock
- The movement is true, free, supple and tireless, movement of the shoulders and forelegs is in unison with the powerful thrust of the hindquarters
- Coat is smooth, double coat with a short dense undercoat, outer-coat is close, each hair straight, hard, and lying flat and is rain-resistant
- Color blue: should be blue, blue-mottled or blue speckled with or without other markings; color red speckle: should be of good even red speckle all over
- Height should be 18-20 inches at withers for dogs and 17-19 inches for females
