The Akita is a dog breed originating in Japan and is one of seven breeds designated as a national monument of Japan . A small Akita statue signifies health, happiness and long life. These statues are usually given to families of Japan when a child is born. If a person is ill, friends will send a small statue of an Akita to express wishes for a quick recovery.
Helen Keller is credited for bringing the first Akita into the United States .

- Heavy bone
- Broad head
- Small eyes and erect ears
- Curled tail, large and full
- Teeth strong with scissors bite preferred
- Neck is thick and muscular
- Shoulders strong and powerful
- Coat: double-coated, undercoat thick, soft, dense and shorter than outer coat, outer coat straight, harsh and standing somewhat off body, hair on head, legs and ears short
- Any color including white, brindle, or pinto
- Size: Males 26 to 28 inches at the withers, females 24 to 26inches
